QUALITY VS DEPTH

One of the most polarizing issues in the fantasy sports world (and this issue cuts across just about every fantasy sport) is QUALITY VS DEPTH. What we mean by this is: Is it better to have 9 or 10 all-star all world players coupled with a bunch of so-so mediocre types and no bench VS having 4 or 5 stars 15-20 above average solid players , and having the bench be average players that can and do contribute to a fantasy squad. ( this of course assumes you cant have a team of 25 super stars on your squad). When we asked fantasy owners which side of the fence they came down on the overwhelming answer was QUALITY. But after looking at various leagues across all sports and several fantasy sport companies were not so sure.

To the TPFS eye it appears having a solid squad that is put together in such a way that it is less likely to be being crippled by injury offers advantages that are far and away better than a handful or superstars and no supporting cast. We could go on and on with details/comparisions and analyze , but for now just remember it maybe better to have all good players than some great and rest bum central. ( more on this to come early next week)

THIS AND THAT

INTRO

This section of the TPFS blog will be devoted to a variety of topics, ranging from the fantasy sports world to the "real sports" world or anything we feel might strike a cord with you the fantasy sports owner.

THIS AND THAT

Perhaps the most asked question among fantasy owners, both novice and expert alike, is "what can I do to get a heads up on my fellow owners in the league?” The answer isn't as involved or as detailed as you might think.

The best advice we can give is this: First, be accountable to your fellow owners and to the league commish. For example, if you make a trade offer and the other owner accepts it right away, then it's a done deal. Saying "Well, I really didn't mean it" or "Can you throw in another player?” is awful form, and within days, everyone in the league will know about it (yes, fantasy owners gossip like a women's sewing club). Next, if you purchase a team with certain conditions going along with the purchase price, it is best to honor those conditions in total (yes, fantasy commissioners talk too). You would think the above advice goes without saying, but as this world as become more disposable, it seems the same is the case with agreements and commitments. In summation, just do what you said you were going to and follow thru on commitments, and within a very short time, the goodwill generated will pay off double and triple in dealing with fellow owners and the league.

Random Thoughts…

About the only player listed as a free agent and getting absolutely no ink is Barry Bonds... hmmm, I wonder what that's all about.

Baseball's winter meetings are coming-time for the Hot Stove to HEAT UP! Oh yeah, I hear Manny may FINALLY get traded (I’ll believe it when I see it!) I think it would be a bad move to break up perhaps one of the most prolific 3-4 combinations in baseball history.

Will bosom buddies Clemens and Pettitte jump ship in Houston and don the Pinstripes once again?

Hats off to Craig Biggio, who is almost certainly going into his last year in the majors. He'll more than likely (barring injury), eclipse the 3,000 hit plateau. Is he Hall of Fame worthy???

For years, Danny Ainge as had a running man crush for Sebastian Telfair, and now he has him. As the saying goes, be careful what you wish for...

I know the election process is key to what this country is all about, but am I the only one smiling that the political ads are finally over?

I personally think that college football's BCS has one too many letters in it. Its time for a playoff system, folks! Here is my scenario-8 teams, 3 rounds, and to the winner go the spoils.

Has anyone noticed the once glory filled San Diego State Aztecs are ranked 116 out of 118? As a member of the class of '86, I sure have (pass the Goldschlager please).

There is one undefeated team left in the NFL. Can Manning and the Colts keep it up? 16-0 in the regular season doesn't mean squat without the ring (something that has eluded Manning to date.)

Should Tiki hang it up? I say “Why not?” Go out on your own terms.
